Turnaround. Residential EV charger applications are reviewed at the morning counter, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. (city EVCS sheet).

EV charger permits. Santa Clarita's Expedited Permit Process for Residential EVCS covers single-family homes and duplexes. Hard-wired chargers need the manufacturer's spec sheet. Plug-in (receptacle) installs need none. Level 2 on a service under 200 amps needs a residential load calculation by a C-10 contractor or electrical engineer. Outdoor chargers or outlets need Planning approval first. Usually one inspection, plus a rough inspection if wiring is concealed in a wall. New or upgraded panels get an electrical permit that can be combined with the charger permit. The city attaches the AB 1236 checklist.

Inspections. The manufacturer's installation manual must be on site at inspection. Questions to [email protected] or 661-255-4935.

The load calculation rule

Santa Clarita’s expedited permit for home chargers covers single-family homes and duplexes. The rule that sets it apart is the service size. If the panel is under 200 amps, a C-10 contractor or electrical engineer must provide a residential load calculation. At 200 amps or more it is not required, but it is recommended. The same logic applies when you add a heat pump or an ADU. How a load calculation works is worth reading before you shop for a charger, and the EV charger load calculation page covers the charger side.

The city also sends outdoor chargers and outlets to Planning first. Usually there is one inspection, plus a rough inspection if wiring is hidden in a wall. Keep the manufacturer’s installation manual on site, because the inspector will ask for it.

Permits and who can pull them

Only licensed C-10 electrical contractors can pull the permit. A panel upgrade is priced as a stack of lines, including its own panel upgrade inspection, and a charger has a separate line by voltage. The schedule shown in the fee table is a year or two old, so a quote may differ. See the typical SoCal panel cost and ask the counter for the current total.

Wind, shutoffs and backup

SCE serves the whole valley. In the Thanksgiving 2020 wind event it shut off lines in Canyon Country and Agua Dulce. CAL FIRE’s 2025 maps put more of the Santa Clarita Valley in Very High zones than before, so look up your address. That is why people here ask about batteries, a generator interlock or a transfer switch. The PSPS prep checklist is a good start.

Newer houses, bigger loads

A full panel is more common than an old one here. The median home dates to 1987, only 16 percent were built before 1970 (31 percent before 1980) and 29 percent after 2000. Owners hold 72 percent of homes. Summers are hot, and tract homes in the east lean hard on air conditioning. Jobs tend to be adding a charger, solar-plus-battery or an ADU. See ADU electrical requirements.

Projects submitted on or after January 1, 2026 fall under the 2025 California codes and Santa Clarita’s amendments. Read about the 2025 code changes if your plans were drawn earlier.

Getting power work done with SCE

SCE sets and reconnects the meter. Its published targets cover only SCE steps, and city review time is extra. How the steps fit together.

Santa Clarita is not on Clean Power Alliance's August 2025 member list, so the supply charge appears to stay with SCE.

Santa Clarita requires professionally prepared plans for a new residential service of 400 amps or more.

Shutoff record: Power was cut in a past event

A January 2021 windstorm left Newhall, Saugus, Canyon Country and Agua Dulce without power. The Tick Fire began October 24, 2019 in Canyon Country and burned 4,615 acres (CAL FIRE incident record).

Questions about electrical work in Santa Clarita

Does a Level 2 charger in Santa Clarita need a load calculation?

Yes, if the service is under 200 amps. The city requires a residential load calculation from a C-10 contractor or electrical engineer in that case. At 200 amps or more none is required, though it is recommended. Hard-wired chargers also need the manufacturer's spec sheet, and plug-in installs do not.

What makes up the Santa Clarita permit fee for a 200-amp service?

The newest city fee schedule posted online is from 2024 and shows several stacked lines: issuance, the service, a separate panel upgrade inspection and a general inspection, plus a 10 percent records charge. The schedule may have changed since, so ask Building and Safety at 661-255-4935 for today's total before you budget.

Is a battery or generator inlet worth it in Canyon Country for wind shutoffs?

It is a reasonable question to price. SCE de-energized Canyon Country and Agua Dulce lines in the Thanksgiving 2020 wind event, and a January 2021 windstorm left Newhall, Saugus, Canyon Country and Agua Dulce without power. The choice depends on what you need to keep running.

Can I put an EV charger on the front of my house in Santa Clarita?

Outdoor chargers and outlets need Planning approval before the building permit. The city's expedited charger process covers single-family homes and duplexes, and the application is reviewed at the morning counter from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Call Building and Safety at 661-255-4935 to confirm how the Planning step works.

Do I need a bigger panel before adding an ADU or heat pump in Santa Clarita?

Not always. The city asks for a load calculation when the service is under 200 amps, and a new service of 400 amps or more needs professionally prepared plans. Run the numbers on the existing panel first. If they fit, a subpanel may be enough.
