How the price ranges are built
Every price on this site is a typical Southern California range for installed work with a permit. Last full review: .
Three kinds of range
Published (8 ranges). The low and high come straight from published cost guides or utility pages, compared with each other. The cost page lists every source with its date.
Published, adjusted (5 ranges). We start from published ranges, then move the low or high end to fit Southern California labor, permits and utility work. The page says so, and it is an estimate, not a quote.
Desk estimate (12 ranges). Used where no good published range exists. The page says it is an estimate and shows what it covers.
What we use as sources
- Government and regulators: the California Energy Commission, the California Public Utilities Commission and the Contractors State License Board.
- Utilities: SCE, SDG&E, LADWP and city-run utilities, for program rules, rebates and service steps.
- Cities: building department pages and posted fee schedules, for permit rules and fees.
- Cost guides: Fixr, Angi, HomeGuide and NRG Clean Power, for installed price ranges. These are the weakest source type, so we compare at least two where we can and note the date.
Anything we could not confirm is left out or marked "check with the city".
How often ranges are reviewed
Each range is checked at least every 90 days, and sooner when a source or a utility program changes. The last full review was October 30, 2026. Each cost page shows the date it was checked.
What a range leaves out
Meter moves, trenching, stucco and drywall repair, extra circuits found during the work, utility fees and the equipment you choose. The range for a hard job is shown separately where it matters.
