Electrician in San Marcos: separate charger line on the fee schedule
San Marcos estimates 1 to 3 business days for a single-family EV charger permit filed online. Most homes were built after 1980, so the questions here are chargers, solar and batteries more than worn panels.

A newer city, a different set of jobs
Forty-three percent of San Marcos homes went up after 2000 and only about 8 percent predate 1970, with a median year of 1996. Sixty-two percent are single-family and 64 percent are owner-occupied.
That changes the job list. Panels here tend to be sized for modern loads, so the common calls are a 200 amp panel upgrade only when an EV, heat pump and solar all land at once, plus EV chargers and battery storage. About 30 percent of homes heat with electricity, so some already carry a large winter load. Start with whether your panel can handle a charger.
The city’s EV charger route
For a single-family home, you fill out the eligibility checklist, the guide to EVSE and the load calculation worksheet. Then you create an account, pick the EVCS permit online and upload the forms. Other locations add a site plan, service load calculations, a single-line diagram and product specs. The first inspection has to be scheduled within 12 months of issuance. See the load calculation page for what the worksheet is checking.
The fee schedule is made of flat items: a charger, a subpanel, altered circuits, new service and plan review. It does not list a house service upgrade on its own line, so ask whether a 100A to 200A swap bills as new service. The city moved to a new schedule in September 2026, which is another reason to ask.
SDG&E, CEA and the meter
SDG&E’s Express Program lets a panel upgrade up to 400A with no added load be filed as “Service Upgrade - No Added Load”. The meter panel needs a 3 ft by 3 ft clear, level work space, and a relocation must stay overhead on the same wall. Read the SDG&E programs guide.
SDG&E’s EV-TOU-5 plan is for households with a registered EV. Its prices change, and community choice customers pay Clean Energy Alliance’s generation charge, so check your own bill before choosing a charging window.
Fire and heat
The Cocos Fire of May 2014 burned in the hills south of the campus and closed Cal State San Marcos for the rest of that week. The city’s fire hazard zone status is not published in one place, so ask the Building Division about your lot. If you want a plan for outages, read PSPS power shutoffs explained. What SDG&E handles on a panel or charger job
SDG&E sets and reconnects the meter and issues a work order for service changes. How the steps fit together.
San Marcos was the fourth city to join CEA (2021) and is one of its seven members (Carlsbad, Del Mar, Escondido, Oceanside, San Marcos, Solana Beach, Vista). CEA's default product is Clean Impact Plus (55% renewable, 75%+ carbon-free as of July 2026). SDG&E still does meter and service work. The City notifies applicable agencies such as SDG&E for meter releases at the end of a permit.

Questions about electrical work in San Marcos
How fast can I get an EV charger permit in San Marcos?
The city estimates 1 to 3 business days for a single-family EV charger permit submitted online with its forms. Other locations, such as multi-family or commercial sites, are estimated at 5 to 10 business days. General plan review typically runs about 15 business days, so a charger that skips plan review is much faster.
What does the EV charger permit cost in San Marcos?
The city lists an EV charging station as its own flat line, separate from the permit issuance fee. A September 1, 2026 fee update replaced the March 2025 schedule, so the amounts may have changed. Ask the Building Division at 760-744-1050 ext. 3244 for the current total before you budget.
Do I need a load calculation for a new charger on my newer San Marcos house?
Yes. The city's single-family path asks for a completed eligibility checklist, a guide to EVSE, and an EVSE load calculation worksheet, all uploaded with the online EVCS permit. The calculation shows whether your panel has room. If it does not, SDG&E offers load management and meter socket adapters as alternatives to a full upgrade.
Who supplies my electricity in San Marcos, and does that change my EV or solar rate?
SDG&E delivers it and keeps the meter. Clean Energy Alliance supplies the power by default; San Marcos joined in 2021. On a community choice plan you pay the Clean Energy Alliance generation charge instead of SDG&E's, so your totals differ from SDG&E's published EV rate table. Solar customers move over at their annual true-up month.
Is wildfire power shutoff a risk on the hills near Cal State San Marcos?
It is a possible risk. The May 2014 Cocos Fire started in the hills south of the campus, and San Marcos has appeared on an SDG&E list of communities that could face shutoffs. No shutoff that cut power in the city has been reported. Read the shutoff prep checklist and consider a battery if you rely on power for medical gear.
