200 amp panel upgrade: what changes and when you need it

A 200 amp panel upgrade swaps your old main panel for a new one and, usually, the wire from the meter to it. The city must inspect it before power comes back.

  • Service wire: 2/0 AWG copper (typical)
  • Power off: About one day
  • Typical SoCal range: $2,500 to $4,500

Short answer

If your house has a 60, 100 or 125 amp panel and you are adding a charger, a heat pump, an ADU or a big remodel, 200 amps is the standard next step. The work usually takes one working day with the power off for most of it. Cost lands between $2,500 and $4,500 in the typical SoCal range, with the permit. The 200 amp panel cost page breaks down that range.

What is replaced

A real 200 amp upgrade is more than a new box. The electrician usually replaces these parts:

  • the main panel with a new 200 amp main breaker panel,
  • the service conductors between the meter and the panel, sized for 200 amps,
  • the mast or riser conduit, if the old one is too small,
  • the grounding and bonding, tied to the water pipe, the gas pipe and a ground electrode,
  • and a surge protective device next to or inside the panel.

The meter socket stays when it is in good shape and rated for 200 amps. If it is not, it is replaced too, and the utility has to approve that. See meter and service mast work.

What an inspector looks at

Each city publishes its own checklist. Laguna Niguel’s, updated in January 2026, is a useful sample of what inspectors check:

  • the panel is listed for outdoor use if it mounts outside,
  • the meter sits between 4 ft 6 in and 6 ft 3 in above finished grade,
  • there is 36 inches of clear space in front of the panel and 30 inches across,
  • one wire per breaker, with neutrals and grounds on their own lugs,
  • all circuits are labeled on the panel door,
  • spare wires not landed on a breaker are capped, and room is left for future breakers,
  • the grounding conductor is sized from the chart, and ground bonds reach the water and gas pipes.

That same chart lists 2/0 AWG conductors and 1-1/2 inch rigid conduit for a 200 amp service, with a 4 AWG grounding electrode conductor for a Ufer ground. These are one city’s numbers. Yours may differ.

Rules that came with the 2022 and 2025 codes

Two items catch people who have not had a panel done in several years.

Surge protection. Under section 230.67, every new or replaced service for a dwelling needs a Type 1 or Type 2 surge protective device, built into the panel or mounted next to it. California’s 2022 code made this a rule starting January 1, 2023. The surge protection page covers it.

Outdoor emergency disconnect. For one- and two-family homes, section 230.85 requires a disconnect in a readily accessible outdoor spot, marked “EMERGENCY DISCONNECT.” Many new panels are service-rated main breaker panels mounted outside, which meets this directly. A panel mounted inside needs a separate outdoor disconnect.

California’s 2025 Electrical Code took effect January 1, 2026 and is based on the 2023 NEC. Ask your city which edition it applies to your permit.

Cost in brief

The typical SoCal range is $2,500 to $4,500 as of October 2026, and it rises when the meter or mast has to move or the service is underground. The 200 amp panel upgrade cost page lists what moves a quote and what a standard quote includes.

Is 200 amps enough?

For one EV charger, a heat pump and an electric range, yes in most homes. A load calculation proves it. The electrician adds up lights, receptacles, large appliances and the continuous loads like chargers, then applies the demand factors in the code. If the total passes 200 amps, you either shed load with a smart panel or go to 400 amp service. The EV charger and panel guide shows a worked example.

On the day

The utility disconnects power, usually in the morning. The electrician removes the old panel, installs the new one, and reconnects each circuit. The city inspects, releases the meter, and the utility restores power, often the same afternoon. The permit and inspection page lists each step.

Questions people ask

Can I go from 100 amps to 200 amps without changing the meter?

Often yes. Many meter sockets on 1970s and later homes are already rated for 200 amps, so the electrician replaces the panel and the wires but keeps the meter base. An older or damaged meter socket has to be replaced, and the utility must approve any change. The electrician checks the socket's rating label first.

What size wire does a 200 amp service need?

One city's published chart lists 2/0 AWG THHN/THWN conductors in a 1-1/2 inch rigid mast or riser for a 200 amp single-family service. That is Laguna Niguel's January 2026 chart. Your city may use a different table, and aluminum wire needs a different size, so go by the permit plans.

Does a 200 amp panel come with more circuit spaces?

Usually. Space counts vary by model, so the electrician picks a panel with room for your current circuits plus some to grow. Many cities also want unused spaces left open for future breakers, so ask your inspector how many spares the city expects. Cities often require unused spaces to stay open for future breakers.

Is a 200 amp upgrade worth it if I am not adding anything?

Only if the old panel is unsafe, full or a problem brand. A working 100 amp panel with open spaces is fine for a home with gas heat and no big electric loads. Upgrade when you add a charger, heat pump, ADU or a major remodel, or when the panel fails an inspection.
