Permits and inspection slots

A panel upgrade needs the SCE disconnect, the swap and the reconnect to fit in one work day. Inspections run during the weekday, with morning slots first, so book early if you want the power back the same day. Ask the counter when the inspector can come before the SCE disconnect is set, because the two dates have to line up and a missed window can leave a home without power overnight. Tell the counter if a subpanel or a new charger circuit is part of the same job. The usual order of steps is on the panel permit and inspection page.

The city lists upgrading or relocating electrical service as permit work. The fee schedule has no panel or EV charger line and the city’s own EV charger steps are not laid out for homeowners, so ask the counter for both. The state rule that covers chargers in every city is in the AB 1236 guide. The city also posts Building Permit Activity and Inspection Activity reports for 2022 to 2026, which show how much work moves through the office.

Large lots and long service runs

Large tract subdivisions from the 1980s to 2000s fill most of Hesperia, with larger-lot parcels at the edges. The median home dates to 1988, so old fuse panels are the exception. The more common problem is distance. A detached shop, barn or guest house can sit a long way from the main panel, and the wire size for that run sets the cost more than the breaker does. A subpanel at the outbuilding is a common answer. Ask for a load calculation before adding a charger or a welder. The town sits near 3,200 feet, so summer cooling is the heavy load.

If you want a charger circuit with the panel, SCE Charge Ready Home is the program to check. The rebate guide covers the income and community rules and the current terms.

Mobile home parks and rentals

The city runs a Mobile Home Park Program and a rental housing inspection program through Building & Safety. Park owners and landlords deal with the city on electrical and safety items, and a tenant’s request for a charger may run into both. Read multifamily and HOA charging if you manage several units.

Shutoff record: Named on a possible-shutoff list only

Hesperia was on SCE's June 2019 list of about 6,500 high-desert customers who might lose power in high winds (KTLA, KNX). No power was cut that Friday. NWS issued a wind advisory covering Victorville, Hesperia and Apple Valley through June 21, 2025.

Questions about electrical work in Hesperia

Do I need a permit to upgrade my electrical service in Hesperia?

Yes. The Building & Safety page lists upgrading or relocating electrical service as a project that needs a permit. Panel, meter-socket and wiring work on your side of the meter also needs a city inspection. Call the Building & Safety Division at 760-947-1311 to confirm what your specific job needs before work starts.

What does a Hesperia panel upgrade permit cost?

The city posts a fee schedule on its website, but it has no line for a home service or panel change. Ask the permit counter for the total on your job, with the panel, any subpanel and any new circuits listed, instead of borrowing a figure from another city. The permit is separate from the electrician's labor and equipment.

My Hesperia mobile home park needs electrical repairs; who inspects?

Start with the city's Building & Safety Division. Hesperia runs a Mobile Home Park Program there, along with a rental housing inspection program. The city does not spell out what the program covers for electrical work, so call 760-947-1311 and ask who permits and inspects before an owner or contractor starts.

Can a contractor change my panel on a Sunday in Hesperia?

Not as a rule. Hesperia code allows construction 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday and not on Sundays or federal holidays. Inspections run on weekdays, with morning slots filling first. Book the inspection early and schedule the SCE disconnect so the power is not off past the end of the work day.

How big a subpanel do I need for a shop far from my Hesperia house?

It depends on the shop's loads and the distance. Welders, compressors and a car charger add up, and a long run needs larger wire to limit voltage drop. The electrician does a load calculation, then sizes the feeder and a subpanel at the building. A mobile home on the same lot may need its own service.
