How much does it cost to install or replace an outlet or GFCI?

Outlet work typically runs $135 to $850 in SoCal. That is a desk range. Fixr lists $120 to $200 to install an outlet and up to $275 for a GFCI, and $100 to $150 for a 20-amp outlet. A full dedicated circuit from the panel costs more and is quoted by the run.

Outlet work sounds simple, but “install an outlet” can mean three different jobs with three different prices. The typical SoCal range is $135 to $850 as of October 2026. The table below uses Fixr’s national guide, plus one desk estimate.

Job Range Basis
Install an outlet $120 to $200 Fixr, national, August 2025
Install a 15-amp GFCI outlet up to $275 Fixr, national, August 2025
Replace a single-pole switch About $75 Fixr, national
Install a 20-amp outlet $100 to $150 Fixr, national
Full dedicated circuit from the panel Desk estimate, up to $850 Cost grows with run length, finished walls and panel space
240V outlet (dryer, range, EV) No published price Cost grows with run length; compare the 20A circuit row above and the EV charger page

A swap is the cheap one

A swap replaces the device on the wire already in the box. It is short work and mostly labor. A GFCI costs a little more because the device is more expensive and the wiring has to be matched to the “line” and “load” terminals. The same job done on a hot or scorched outlet is a different matter: if there are burn marks, see hot or burning outlets first, since the wire behind it may be damaged.

Adding an outlet

A new outlet needs a place to get power. The usual choice is an existing outlet or junction box on a circuit with spare capacity. The electrician cuts the wall, runs cable, sets a box and patches. Access drives the price. A garage wall with exposed studs is easy. A finished kitchen wall behind tile is not.

A dedicated circuit

A dedicated circuit gives a single appliance its own breaker and wire back to the panel. No neutral guide publishes a price for a full dedicated circuit, so this top of the range is a desk estimate; Fixr lists $100 to $150 for a 20-amp outlet. Typical uses are a home office, a workshop, a freezer or a microwave. The length of the wire run and the amount of drywall involved explain most of the spread. If the panel has no open space, a subpanel may enter the picture.

A hot tub or pool is a dedicated circuit with GFCI protection, and its price is on the hot tub and pool wiring cost page.

Where GFCI protection is required

GFCI protection cuts power fast when current leaks to ground, which prevents shocks. The 2023 NEC, which California’s 2025 code is based on, requires GFCI at all kitchen receptacles, in basements, garages, outdoors, and within 20 feet of a pool wall, with other locations listed in the code. Many older SoCal homes do not meet this. A GFCI upgrade is a small, common fix that sometimes comes up during a home sale inspection.

Permits and fees

Like-for-like swaps are often exempt. The City of San Diego exempts same-size, same-type device swaps under SDMC 129.0303(a). New outlets and new circuits generally need a permit. In San Diego, one published fee line is $176.57 for the first five circuits of 15 to 45 amps. Irvine charges a $31.88 residential issuance fee plus $13.66 per branch circuit. Check your city page, such as San Diego or Irvine, and the permits guide.

How to compare quotes

  1. Ask whether the quote is a swap, an added outlet or a new circuit.
  2. Ask what happens if the circuit is already full.
  3. Ask whether patching is included.
  4. Ask for the permit fee as its own line, when one applies.
  5. If several outlets need work, ask for a price for the group. A service call cost page explains minimum charges.

What is not included

  • Drywall repair and paint after a wall is opened
  • A panel upgrade or subpanel if the panel is full
  • Rewiring old or ungrounded circuits
  • The cost of the outlet cover or specialty device, unless listed
  • Permit fees for added circuits

What moves the price

FactorEffectRange
Swap, add or new circuitAn outlet install is $120 to $200 nationally (Fixr); a 20-amp outlet is $100 to $150 (Fixr), and a full dedicated circuit from the panel costs more and is quoted by the run
Wall accessAn outlet near an open panel run or unfinished garage is cheap; a finished wall with insulation takes more time
Circuit capacityAn overloaded circuit cannot take another outlet, so the job becomes a new circuit
Panel spaceA full panel has no spot for a new breaker, and the job may grow into a subpanel or panel upgrade
Voltage and amperageA 240V outlet for a dryer, range or EV costs more than a standard outlet because of heavier wire and a two-pole breaker; no published price exists, so ask for a written quote

Questions people ask

Where does the code require GFCI outlets?

The 2023 NEC, which California's 2025 code is based on, requires GFCI in all kitchen receptacles, basements, garages, outdoors, and near pools, among other places. It also covers listed appliances such as dishwashers and dryers. Older homes often lack it. A tester outlet or an electrician's check shows which receptacles are protected.

Is a GFCI outlet or a GFCI breaker the better choice?

An outlet protects that receptacle and any wired downstream from it. A breaker protects the whole circuit from the panel. Outlets are cheaper per spot and easier to reset. Breakers cost more but remove the need for a GFCI in each box. Your electrician can price both for your layout.

Why does a new outlet cost more than swapping one?

A swap replaces a device on wire that is already there. A new outlet needs a new box, wire to reach it, a cut in the wall and a patch. If the circuit is full, the job also needs a new breaker and wire from the panel, which is why a new 20-amp circuit costs more.

Do I need a permit to replace an outlet?

Like-for-like swaps of an outlet are often exempt. The City of San Diego, for example, exempts same-size, same-type device swaps. A new outlet or new circuit generally needs a permit and an inspection. Check your city's permit office, and ask your electrician who files.
