A small town that tripled

Beaumont had 11,384 people in 2000 and 53,036 in 2020, one of California’s fastest growing cities. Most of that is master-planned tract housing such as Four Seasons (55 and older), Fairway Canyon and Tournament Hills. The old town core keeps a small stock of pre-war houses, and those are the ones to watch for original wiring.

New homes mean newer panels, and those built after 2020 often have rooftop solar. The usual problem is not age. It is a panel that is new but full. Start with smart electrical panels and EV charger load management. For homes with solar, solar inverter and system repair is worth a read.

Wind in the Pass

The San Gorgonio Pass is one of SCE’s Santa Ana wind corridors. A wind-driven outage in November 2018 took out power around Brookside and Cherry avenues, and the city opened its recreation center for residents. In December 2024 SCE shut off power to thousands of customers in the Pass, and Beaumont hosted a resource center even though it was not on the list.

Fire is the other half. The Apple Fire of July 2020 started in Cherry Valley next to the city and forced about 7,800 people to evacuate. Homes on the north side near Cherry Valley and on the south and east edges carry the higher risk. Read the PSPS prep checklist and home battery installation.

Reading the city’s permit pages

Beaumont’s schedule has a named line for a residential EV charger plug, which many cities lack, so the charger price is easy to confirm. The city’s permit page gives departments 15 business days for a first review and 7 for each later one, which is a planning number, not a promise for a simple job. The city does not post an EV checklist online, so ask Building and Safety what to submit. Compare the state rules in the AB 1236 guide.

Heat and the utility bill

Beaumont sits at about 2,600 feet, and the July average high is above 96 F. That is a heavy air conditioning load, which matters when you add a charger to the same panel. SCE’s TOU-D-PRIME plan peaks from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., so charging from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or overnight is cheaper. See time-of-use rates for EV owners.

SCE Charge Ready Home helps with panel and charger circuit costs for eligible SCE customers in income-qualified or disadvantaged-community households. Check current terms before you count on it. Nearby Edison cities include Moreno Valley and Redlands.

Questions about electrical work in Beaumont

Which Beaumont fee lines apply to a panel up to 200 amp?

The fee sheet lists $211 for plan review and $134 for inspection on a panel up to 200 amp, $345 together, plus a $63 residential processing fee. The sheet is labeled effective July 1, 2023, so Beaumont may have updated it. Confirm the current amount with Building and Safety before you sign a bid.

My Four Seasons home has a full panel. Can it take an EV charger?

Maybe. Homes in newer master-planned areas like Four Seasons often have 200 amp panels, and some are close to full. A load calculation shows the room that is left. If there is none, load management or a subpanel can add a charger without replacing the whole panel, and the electrician can price both.

Should I get a battery in Beaumont because of Santa Ana wind outages?

It is worth pricing. The Pass is a wind corridor. A November 2018 wind outage hit 2,506 Beaumont customers, and in December 2024 SCE cut power to 9,003 customers nearby, though Beaumont was not on the shutoff list. A battery covers outages; a generator inlet costs less.

Is Beaumont on Banning Electric or Edison?

Edison. Banning has its own city-owned utility next door, but SCE outage reports and the city's shutoff page name SCE for Beaumont and Cherry Valley. If you live near the Banning line, check the utility name on your bill before you plan service work or a rate switch.

Do I email my permit or use the portal in Beaumont?

Both are used. Electrical Panel Upgrade is a permit type in the city's online portal. Permits not listed there are emailed to [email protected]. If a solar job includes a panel upgrade, the city says a separate application must be emailed. Inspection requests must arrive by 3 p.m. for next-day service.
