Power from SCE
Electrician in Yucaipa: resource center and older homes
SCE staffed a community resource center in Yucaipa during its January 2025 shutoff event. Backup power is the first question here, and a panel check comes right after it.

EV charger permits. Yucaipa's municipal code sets fees by resolution for expedited permits and EV charging station permits, which is the local implementation of AB 1236. AB 1236 (Gov. Code 65850.7) requires every city to run an expedited, administrative review for EV charger permits and publish a checklist, and AB 970 (Gov. Code 65850.71) adds review timelines (GO-Biz).
Inspections. The Building & Safety page posts a 'Residential Electrical Requirements' handout (kitchen counter circuits at 20 amps, laundry circuit, and similar items) and SCE's Electrical Service Requirements diagram.

The January 2025 event
During SCE’s January 17 to 27, 2025 shutoff event, 509,245 customers were notified and 152,393 were de-energized across nine counties. SCE staffed a resource center in Yucaipa, one of three in San Bernardino County, and closed it on January 24 at 7:30 p.m. In October 2019 Yucaipa was also on a list of cities SCE was considering for a shutoff. The city’s Utilities page posts SCE’s shutoff decision document and newsletter, and a city podcast from February 11, 2025 covers the topic with an SCE representative.
For homeowners, that turns backup power into a real planning question. Read PSPS explained and the PSPS prep checklist. A critical loads subpanel keeps the cost of a battery or generator interlock down by limiting what it must carry. Check your own parcel against the fire map, since the city does not publish zone status by address.
Middle-aged housing
Over half of Yucaipa’s homes predate 1980 (median 1978), 37 percent predate 1970 and about 1 in 5 predate 1960. Owners hold about 73 percent of homes, and 72 percent are single-family. That is a mix of older foothill homes and later tracts. Some older homes may carry a Zinsco or Federal Pacific panel, and some older wiring needs a look; see aluminum wiring risks. Only 16 percent heat with electricity, so a heat pump swap adds a new load. Start with heat pump electrical requirements.
Fees changed in 2026
Old Yucaipa fee figures are stale, because the council took up a new schedule on April 13, 2026. The fee estimator on the city site is the safest check. For a charger, the municipal code puts EV permit fees in a council resolution, which is the local version of the state rule in the AB 1236 guide. Building and Safety also posts a residential electrical requirements handout, which is worth reading before the electrician draws the plan.
SCE and the meter
SCE is the only electric utility. SCE’s allowance toward its own side of the work is set by an SCE Service Planner for your address, and its timelines cover only its own steps, so city permitting adds to the wait. See panel upgrade timeline and meter spot. For help with a panel, see the rebate guide.

Local details
- Yucaipa was one of three San Bernardino County locations SCE staffed, so Yucaipa-area customers were affected. Source
- Yucaipa's Building & Safety handouts include a Residential Electrical Requirements sheet and SCE's Electrical Service Requirements diagram (meter height 4 feet to 6 feet 3 inches above grade, 3 feet if in a meter closet), which are the dimensions an inspector checks on a service change. Source
- Yucaipa's municipal code lets the City Council set fees by resolution for expedited permits and EV charging station permits. The council took up an updated Comprehensive User Fee Schedule on April 13, 2026 (Resolution 2026-03), so published electrical fees changed in 2026 and the older FY 2023-24 numbers should not be quoted. Source
- Three different water providers (South Mesa Water Company, Western Heights Water Company, Yucaipa Valley Water District) serve Yucaipa depending on the address. Electricity is SCE for all of it, so a utility check for a panel or meter job needs only the SCE account. Source

Questions about electrical work in Yucaipa
Should I add a battery or generator inlet in Yucaipa because of SCE's January 2025 shutoffs?
It is worth pricing. SCE opened a community resource center in Yucaipa during its January 17 to 27, 2025 shutoff event, and it closed January 24 once the customers it supported were restored. The city also posts SCE's shutoff guidance. A battery handles short outages, while an inlet box lets a generator run key circuits for longer ones.
Which Yucaipa fee numbers can I trust after the 2026 fee update?
The city council took up an updated user fee schedule on April 13, 2026, so older fee numbers should not be trusted. The city site links a fee estimator, and the municipal code says the council sets EV charger permit fees by resolution. Use the estimator or ask the Building and Safety counter for the total on your job.
Who supplies electricity in Yucaipa, and why do I see three water companies?
SCE supplies electricity to the whole city. Water is different: South Mesa Water Company, Western Heights Water Company or Yucaipa Valley Water District serves you depending on your address. For a panel or meter job you only need your SCE account, since the water provider is not involved in the electrical permit or the meter.
How does Yucaipa handle EV charger permits?
The municipal code lets the City Council set fees by resolution for expedited permits and EV charging station permits, which is how the city carries out the state expedited-permit rule, AB 1236. Ask Building and Safety for the current list of what to submit with a home charger application.
Does SCE's Charge Ready Home help with a panel upgrade in Yucaipa?
It can, for SCE customers in income-qualified or disadvantaged-community households, with a licensed contractor, and you can apply while planning, during the work or up to six months after. It is aimed at a panel upgrade plus a dedicated 240-volt circuit for a Level 2 charger, and it does not pay for the charger. Check the current terms on the program page.
