When a Palmdale house needs a bigger panel

In Palmdale the trigger is usually the air conditioner. Add a heat pump, a charger or a second AC unit to a tract panel, and the main breaker can run out of room.

Signs the panel is the limit

The usual signs are a main breaker that trips on hot afternoons, a second AC unit that cannot be added, or a heat pump quote that comes back with a panel upgrade on it. Palmdale grew in the 1980s through the 2000s, and about half of homes were built before 1990, so most panels are not antiques. They were sized for the appliances of their day. Fewer than one in five homes predates 1980, and the older core and rural lots are where small services still turn up. A load calculation shows how close the house is. The heat pump requirements guide lists what a new unit adds.

Permit, counter and inspection

A panel upgrade uses the regular electrical permit, and a typical home job is permit-only, without plan check. The city does not publish a turnaround. Applications, payment and inspection booking all run through the Accela Citizen Portal. The counter is open Monday to Thursday and closed Fridays, so a Thursday finish may wait until the next week for an inspection. Ask the electrician to book the visit the day the work is done. The city has its own electrical code chapter, Municipal Code 8.04, so ask whether any local amendment touches the equipment you are installing.

Rentals and rural lots

Rental owners have a second reason to upgrade. The Residential Rental Unit Registration program requires an inspection, and landlords sometimes fix panels before registering. In a rental, the owner has to approve the permit.

On the edges of town, long service runs, well pumps and outbuildings can call for a subpanel as well as a main panel. Typical SoCal range for a standard swap is $2,500 to $4,500. Meter moves or a new service run cost $5,500 to $10,000, as the cost page shows. A subpanel adds to that.

Outage warnings and backup power

SCE named Palmdale in high-desert wind shutoff warnings in June 2019 and October 2021. No power was cut that June Friday. Owners who want a battery or generator hookup should say so before the panel is sized, so the electrician can plan the extra circuits and a transfer switch. If your goal is a charger, the Palmdale charger page covers the permit forms.

Questions people ask

Does replacing my AC unit mean a new Palmdale panel?

Not always. A like-for-like swap often fits. A bigger unit, a heat pump or a second system can push the load past what the main breaker supports. A load calculation decides it. Palmdale's long, hot summers make the air conditioner the biggest load in most homes, so extra equipment usually tips it.

My Palmdale landlord asked for a panel fix. Why?

Rental homes must pass a city inspection under the Residential Rental Unit Registration program, Ordinance 1273. Landlords sometimes fix panels and smoke or CO alarms before registering. If an inspector flags a damaged or unsafe panel, replacement is a normal outcome. Ask the landlord which item the inspection raised.

What does SCE do on a Palmdale panel upgrade?

SCE covers the utility side, such as the service wire and transformer. Every residential customer gets an allowance toward that work, and an SCE Service Planner states the amount for your address. Customer-side panel and meter-socket work needs a city permit and inspection first. Ask the electrician to confirm the order.

Is a panel swap covered by Palmdale's SolarAPP+ process?

No. The city offers SolarAPP+ for residential rooftop solar and has a Solar Self Certification form, but panel upgrades still go through the regular electrical permit. If solar is also planned, the panel permit is a separate application. Decide whether the panel or the solar goes first.
