Panel upgrade in Long Beach
Long Beach homes skew old, so a panel job often means replacing an aging box. The work needs a city inspection before SCE sets the meter.

Old housing, uneven panels
The median Long Beach home was built in 1959. About 34% predate 1950 and 65% predate 1970, so a good share of panels are decades old. Age alone does not condemn a panel, but it raises questions worth asking the electrician: what brand is it, are there fuses, are breakers doubled up, and is the wiring behind it still in good shape. A panel swap is also the moment to repair anything found, so ask for any extra work as a separate line. A 200-amp upgrade suits a house adding a heat pump or EV charger, and the 200-amp cost page shows the typical SoCal range as of October 2026.
If the panel is a Zinsco or Federal Pacific unit, read about those panel brands before you decide. A federal review of Federal Pacific breakers in 1983 did not order a recall, but many electricians still recommend replacing them.
Who pulls the permit and who talks to SCE
Ask the electrician to name who files the permit, who books the inspection, and who tells SCE the work passed. Under SCE rules the meter is set after the city reports a passed inspection, so a missed notice can leave a finished panel without power. Contractors with a city PIN can file a qualifying changeout online with no plan review, which is worth asking about. Anything else goes to plan review, and the city does not publish how long that takes. The timeline guide lays out the order of steps.
Reading the quote
Permit lines are small next to labor and materials, so read the quote for scope. Ask whether it covers the meter socket, the mast, grounding and bonding, a surge protector and patching. SCE’s Charge Ready Home pays toward a 200-amp panel only for SCE customers in income-qualified or disadvantaged-community households, so check current terms. Do not count on a city panel rebate.
Outages and heat
No wildfire shutoffs are on record for Long Beach. Its outages have come from failed underground equipment, and a new panel will not fix that. A battery or a subpanel for critical loads can. The north and east ZIPs 90805, 90807 and 90808 sit in the hotter climate zone 8, where air conditioning pushes a panel harder. See the Long Beach city page for background.

Questions people ask
Is a fuse box a reason to upgrade my panel in Long Beach?
Often, yes. A fuse box limits the number of circuits and the size of loads such as a heat pump or EV charger, and some insurers and buyers ask for a modern breaker panel. An electrician can check for overfused circuits and old wiring. Ask for the findings in writing before you decide.
Who tells SCE that the panel work passed inspection?
Under SCE Rule 16, SCE sets the meter after the building department reports that the work passed inspection. Ask your electrician to confirm the city sent that notice. If power is not back within a few days of the pass, call the electrician first, then SCE with your service address.
Can the electrician get a Long Beach panel permit online?
For qualifying panel changeouts, yes. Licensed California contractors with a city PIN can apply and pay online and get automatic issuance with no plan review, even outside business hours. Jobs that do not qualify go to submitted plan review. Ask whether your electrician holds a PIN.
Does a new panel protect me from Long Beach outages?
No. A new panel does not stop outages from the grid. It only makes your side safer and larger. To keep key circuits running, ask about a battery or a critical-loads subpanel. Ask the electrician to size it to the loads you want covered.
