Power from SDG&E

Electrician in Santee: solar bundles need an SDG&E work order

Santee charges for service work by the hundred amps, so a 200 amp panel is two units. SDG&E serves the city, and over half the homes were built before 1980.

How the fee lines work

Santee counts service work in 100 amp units, so the permit grows with the panel size, and each affected circuit adds its own line. A panel replacement is priced as service plus affected circuits plus the issuance fee, and the table on this page shows the amounts. There is no EV-specific line, so a charger is priced as a circuit. The practical advice is to ask for the line items and count the circuits the electrician plans to touch, because that is what moves the total. Plan check is billed by the hour when plans are required.

All building permits go through the online portal and paper plans are no longer accepted. The Building Division is at 10601 Magnolia Avenue, Building 4. See the panel upgrade cost page for typical SoCal ranges beyond the permit.

Checklist and circuit card

The city’s Plug-In Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Permitting Checklist is a six-phase guide. It covers service size, an inspection of the breaker panel, sizing at 125 percent of continuous load, and inspections after conduit goes in and before wiring is connected. An Electrical Circuit Card and an Electrical Load Calculation form are on the permit page, and the card must be at the service equipment for the rough inspection. Read EV charger load calculation and load management.

Tract-age houses

Santee’s housing is newer than most of the region: 20 percent of homes date before 1970 and 54 percent before 1980. About 72 percent of homes are owner-occupied and 69 percent are single-family. That puts many houses at the age where panel upgrades and a first heat pump meet the same service. See heat pump electrical requirements.

Bundled with a solar job

If the panel upgrade comes with solar, the city’s SolarAPP+ page requires an SDG&E work order with the application. That puts the utility paperwork ahead of the city permit. A plain upgrade up to 400 amps with no added load can use SDG&E’s Express Program instead, and jobs that add load or upsize the service line go through SDG&E’s My Project Center. Ask the electrician which route applies before the schedule is set.

SDG&E, rates and outages

Households get generation and delivery from SDG&E. Prices on the EV rate change at least yearly, so read the SDG&E programs guide and check the current table. Inland East County cities see shutoff warnings in wind events, so a transfer switch or battery is a fair question here.

For comparison, El Cajon uses a different fee table and has a different housing mix.

  • Santee's SolarAPP+ track allows a main panel upgrade only if an SDG&E work order is included, so the utility paperwork precedes the City permit. Source
  • The City's Sustainable Santee action plan calls for a complete 40 A electrical service and one charger for new single-family construction. Source
  • Santee is one of the SDG&E bundled cities: it is not in San Diego Community Power or Clean Energy Alliance. Santee council discussed a CCA in 2019 but no membership followed. Source

Questions about electrical work in Santee

Why does Santee count a 200 amp panel as two permit units?

On the July 1, 2026 schedule, single-phase service is $55.44 per 100 amps, so 200 amps is $110.88. A $55.44 permit issuance fee and $18.48 for each affected circuit are added. State SMIP fees are not included. Your total depends on how many circuits the electrician touches, so ask for the line items.

Do I need an SDG&E work order before Santee will permit my panel?

For a panel upgrade bundled with solar, yes. The city's SolarAPP+ page says an SDG&E work order must be included. For a plain upgrade up to 400 amps with no added load, SDG&E's Express Program accepts a filing with photos of the existing panel. Either way, the utility paperwork comes before the city permit.

Can I get an expedited EV charger permit in Santee?

No expedited program is offered right now. The city says it is not currently offering expedited review programs, and every submittal goes through the online portal. A charger is listed under Residential Alteration. The city does not publish a day count for simple electrical permits, so ask the Building Division.

Do I buy electricity from SDG&E or a community choice program in Santee?

From SDG&E. Santee is not in San Diego Community Power or Clean Energy Alliance, so generation and delivery both come from SDG&E on one bundled bill. Households with a registered EV can use SDG&E's EV rate schedule, and its prices change at least yearly, so compare plans on a recent bill.

I live in a 1960s Santee tract home. Will adding a heat pump and charger overload the panel?

It might. More than half of Santee homes were built before 1980, and the city's EV checklist and circuit card require a service size and load check. The electrician adds up existing loads, the heat pump and the charger, then compares them with the panel. A load management device is one option short of a bigger panel.
