Power from SDG&E

Electrician in Poway: SDG&E shutoff list and backup power

Poway was one of the largest cities on SDG&E's October 2 to 5, 2026 power shutoff list. That makes backup power the first question here, ahead of panel size for most owners.

EV charger permits. Residential EV charger: apply for an electrical permit in the City's online portal with title page, electrical diagram (main panel information, dedicated circuit size, wire and conduit sizing), load calculations and manufacturer specifications (Residential EV Charging Stations handout, revised 06/2025). The City cites AB 970 streamlining: completeness check within 5 days and review within 20 business days for up to 25 chargers.

What happened in October 2026

SDG&E’s shutoff list for October 2 to 5, 2026 covered about 35,000 customers in North, East and South County. Poway and El Cajon were the largest cities on it. Check your parcel against the CAL FIRE map, since the city does not publish fire zone status for individual lots.

When power goes out for days, owners ask about backup first. Compare the two routes in generator vs battery backup, then look at a generator interlock kit or home battery installation. The PSPS prep checklist covers the rest.

Houses from the 1960s and 1970s

Poway is mostly single-family and owner-occupied. Poway’s housing is mostly 1960s to 1980s: over half of homes predate 1980, three in four predate 1990 and about 1 in 5 predate 1970. That is mostly breaker-panel housing, so a panel and service size should be checked house by house rather than assumed.

Summers are warm inland, with a July high near 82 F in climate zone 10, so air conditioning is a big load. That is the second reason a panel runs out of room, after chargers. See the panel upgrade cost range.

One flat fee, and a contracted plan checker

Poway contracts plan check, permits and inspection to EsGil Corporation. You still file through the city’s online portal or at the Building Division counter. A residential electrical permit that is not part of a building permit is a flat fee, not based on the job’s value. Residential projects typically need 5 to 6 inspections.

To schedule, use the portal or call the inspection line and leave a message. Requests before 4 p.m. go on the next business day. Inspections run Monday to Friday, including Fridays when City Hall is closed.

Charger paperwork and the SDG&E side

The residential EV handout (revised June 2025) asks for panel information, dedicated circuit size, wire and conduit sizing, load calculations and manufacturer specs. Read EV charger load calculation and SDG&E EV and panel programs.

If the upgrade adds no load, SDG&E has a faster path for a service or panel upgrade up to 400 amp. Ask the city whether any local rebate is open. Escondido is the nearest inland city page, with a different supplier.

Planning the outage window

A panel swap means the power is off for several hours, and Poway’s inspection rules decide how long. Requests made before 4 p.m. go on the next business day, so book the inspection while the permit is still open and ask your electrician to hold the cutover for the morning of the inspection. In shutoff season, avoid scheduling the work for a high wind forecast. Check SDG&E’s notices first, since a planned cutover on top of an unplanned shutoff leaves a household without power for longer than either alone.

Questions about electrical work in Poway

Is a generator or battery worth adding in Poway after the October 2026 power shutoffs?

For many homes, yes. Poway was among the largest cities on SDG&E's October 2 to 5, 2026 list, which covered about 35,000 customers in North, East and South County. A battery runs quietly, and a generator inlet costs less. Pick based on what must stay on and for how long.

Is a Poway panel upgrade a flat permit fee or priced by amps?

The Master Fee Schedule adopted 7/20/26 lists a flat $157 for a residential electrical permit and a $60 permit issuance fee. A pre-final inspection is $157 each. The schedule has no separate panel-size line, so a panel upgrade falls under the flat permit. Ask the Building Division whether plan check applies to your job.

How long does Poway take to approve an EV charger permit?

The city cites state AB 970 targets: a completeness check within 5 days and a review within 20 business days for up to 25 chargers. A single home charger is often much quicker, but the city does not publish a separate time for simple electrical permits. Ask when you apply.

Is my Poway bill from SDG&E only, or is there a community power option?

SDG&E only. Poway is not on SDG&E's list of community choice member cities, so households buy both generation and delivery from SDG&E at its bundled rates. That differs from San Diego, Chula Vista and La Mesa, where San Diego Community Power supplies the electricity by default.

Can I add a charger to my Poway home without upgrading the panel?

Possibly. The city's EV handout requires a load calculation with the application. SDG&E lists Meter Socket Adapters and load management as ways to add a charger without a full service upgrade. If the calculation shows room on your 200 amp panel, a charger may fit as is.
