Power from SCE

Panel upgrades in Ontario, California

The city side of an Ontario panel job is predictable. The part that stalls is SCE, so the order in which the electrician files requests matters more than the panel brand.

Order the requests so nothing waits

A panel job in Ontario has three tracks: the city permit, the city inspection and the SCE meter work. The permit goes through the online portal and is the quick one. The slow one is SCE, whose published timelines cover only its own work and leave out city time. Because of that, ask the electrician to submit the SCE request for a panel upgrade or meter spot at the start, not after the city passes the job. A lockring removal or reinstall is a different request that goes through the account holder by phone. The panel upgrade timeline guide explains the order, and the permit and inspection page covers what the inspector looks for.

Keep the permit alive

A permit that sits waiting on a utility can run out. The city charges for a second extension request on the same residential permit, so the cheapest plan is one where the inspection and the meter date are close together. Also check the counter hours before you plan a pickup, since the Building Counter has closures every week and one morning a month.

Who needs a bigger panel here

Half of Ontario homes were built before 1980, and the median year is 1980. The old Model Colony grid near Euclid Avenue is where undersized services show up, and a 200-amp upgrade is the usual target. In Ontario Ranch the panel is modern, and upgrades come from new loads. The panel cost page lists typical SoCal ranges as of October 2026.

Utility-side costs and help

SCE gives every residential customer an allowance toward its own work, such as the service wire and transformer, and a service planner states the amount for a given address. Work beyond it is paid by the customer, so a swap with no new line usually costs less than an upsized service. Households that are income-qualified or in a disadvantaged community may also qualify for help with the panel through SCE’s Charge Ready Home, so check current terms in the program guide. The Ontario city page has more local detail.

Utility and meter work

Ontario's Building Counter is closed every Tuesday 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. and the first Thursday of each month 8:00 to 10:00 a.m., so a same-morning permit pickup for a service change should avoid those windows.

Questions people ask

Does a solar or battery project change the panel permit in Ontario?

It adds a second permit path. The city reviews residential solar and storage under 38.4 kW through its Symbium platform, but a panel or service change is a separate electrical permit through the regular permit portal. If both are planned, ask the electrician which one is filed first and how the two inspections line up.

What happens if my Ontario permit runs out while SCE is still scheduling?

You can ask for an extension, and the city charges for a second extension request on the same residential permit. That is why a stalled SCE request costs money. Ask the electrician to file with SCE at the start of the job, and keep the city inspection date close to the expected meter date.

Is a newer Ontario Ranch house likely to need a bigger panel?

Usually not because of age. Homes there start with a modern panel, so an upgrade is about added load: an EV charger, a heat pump, an ADU subpanel or a pool. A load calculation shows whether the current service can carry the new equipment, or whether a sub-panel is the cheaper fix.

Who requests the city inspection in Ontario, the owner or SCE?

The owner or the electrician, never SCE. SCE does not coordinate the city inspection, so someone has to call the inspector line or use the Book an Appointment link on the Building page. Ask the electrician to confirm the date in writing, and keep the permit number handy for the call.
