Power from Anaheim Public Utilities

Panel upgrade in Anaheim

An Anaheim panel upgrade runs through the city building inspector and the city utility, with no SCE planner involved. The useful questions are about who books what, and when.

Two offices, one job

The sequence in the box above has two inspections and two offices, which is where Anaheim jobs lose time. The permit and the building inspection sit with the city. The meter spot report and the meter shop inspection sit with the utility. Do not assume one office books the other’s visit. Ask the electrician to write down who requests each one and to tell you the date of both inspections before the old panel comes off, since the house has no power between the disconnect and the reconnect. The permit and inspection page and the utility coordination guide give the generic order.

Fees and incentives, handled carefully

The city’s fee amounts for a service upgrade should be confirmed with the Building Division by phone before you budget. The utility’s incentive for a panel upgrade has strings attached, covered in the questions below and in the rebate table. Compare the whole job against the typical SoCal range on the panel cost page, which is dated October 2026.

What is behind the wall

About four in ten Anaheim homes were built before 1970, and about two in three before 1980. The flatland tracts from that era often have undersized service and overhead drops. Older panels from the 1960s and 1970s sometimes carry brands with a poor record. Look at the label inside the door, and if it reads Zinsco or Federal Pacific, read the guide to those brands before the electrician quotes a simple swap. A newer Platinum Triangle condo or an Anaheim Hills home from the 1970s to 1990s is a different job, usually about added load, not age.

Streets with extra review

Inside the Colony and the three other historic districts, exterior changes can pick up design review. Moving a meter or adding a mast on the front of a bungalow is the kind of change to raise early. On the hillside, strong Santa Ana wind days are the reason APU keeps a shutoff procedure on file. The rest of the local picture is on the Anaheim city page.

Utility and meter work

Per APU's Residential Electrical Panel Upgrade page: call APU Customer Service at 714-765-3300; a utility inspector contacts the customer within 2 to 3 business days to approve the panel location; APU issues a meter spot report that goes to the building inspector; the city building inspector approves the panel and wiring first; then the utility and meter shop inspection is booked with the APU electrical inspector (714-765-6847); a crew energizes the panel within 3 to 5 business days after both inspections pass (the EV charger checklist says 2 to 5). A residential panel upgrade also needs an electrical permit from the Building Division, which can be pulled online.

Questions people ask

Can an Anaheim panel upgrade alone qualify for an APU incentive?

Possibly not. APU's panel incentive is described as an add-on for customers in its EV charger rebate program, so a panel swap with no charger may fall outside it. Confirm with APU before work starts, and keep the permit's final sign-off and your receipts, since the incentive depends on them.

Does living in a historic district change a panel swap in Anaheim?

It can. The Colony, Five Points, Historic Palm and Hoskins districts add design review to some exterior changes. A panel swapped in the same spot is less visible than a new mast or meter location, so ask the city before you move either. Interior-only work usually raises fewer questions.

Should the electrician or the owner call APU?

Agree on this before the permit is pulled. Many electricians make the call, but a utility inspector may contact the owner to approve the panel location, so keep your phone number current on the request. Ask who will be present for the meter shop inspection and who receives the meter spot report.

Do wind and fire risks in Anaheim Hills affect a new panel?

They affect backup planning more than the panel. APU runs its own shutoff procedure and uses it only as a last resort in extreme wind and fire weather. If a battery or generator inlet is in your plans, tell the electrician before the permit is filed so the panel layout leaves room for it.
