Pool and spa wiring in Southern California
A hot tub needs its own 240V circuit with GFCI protection, a disconnect in sight of the tub, and bonded metal, all under a city electrical permit.
- Typical spa circuit: 50 A, 240 V
- Typical SoCal range: $800 to $2,500
- Code article: NEC 680
- Permit: Required

The short version of what a spa circuit needs
Pool and spa wiring is its own chapter of the electrical code. In the National Electrical Code it is Article 680. California’s 2025 Electrical Code took effect January 1, 2026 and is built on the 2023 NEC, so the rules below follow that article. The city inspector enforces whichever edition the city has adopted.
A typical hot tub job has five parts:
- A dedicated 240V circuit from the panel, sized from the spa’s data plate.
- GFCI protection for that circuit, usually in an outdoor spa disconnect box near the tub.
- A disconnect that is in sight of the tub.
- Bonding of metal parts near the water.
- An electrical permit and a city inspection.
Most residential tubs use a 50-amp circuit with 6 AWG copper. Smaller tubs may use 40 amps and larger dual-pump tubs 60 amps, as the manufacturer data plates show. The data plate on the spa decides, not a rule of thumb.
Plug-in tubs versus hardwired tubs
Plug-and-play spas rated for a standard 120V, 20A GFCI outlet exist, but they are small and slow to heat. Even they need an outlet on a dedicated circuit. Anything with several jets, a bigger heater or two pumps needs a hardwired 240V circuit.
Hardwired is also where the code asks the most. Under the NEC’s GFCI rule for spas (680.44 in the 2017 edition), any outlet that supplies a spa or hot tub must be GFCI protected. A listed self-contained unit that carries its own built-in GFCI is the main exception.
Disconnect, switches and receptacles
The spa disconnect has two jobs. It lets someone shut off power for service, and it gives people near the tub a way to stop the pumps. For a one-family home the usual layout is a disconnect within sight of the tub, about 5 feet from the inside wall, and reachable without going through a door or gate. The data plate and the adopted code edition control the exact distance.
Rules for an indoor spa are tighter. EC&M’s summary of the 2017 NEC lists these distances:
- Wall switches at least 5 feet horizontally from the inside walls.
- Receptacles at least 6 feet horizontally from the inside walls.
- At least one general-purpose receptacle between 6 and 10 feet from the tub.
- GFCI protection for 125V receptacles rated 30 amps or less within 10 feet.
Bonding
Bonding connects the metal parts around the tub so they stay at the same voltage. For an indoor spa the code names metal parts to bond and allows a solid copper jumper no smaller than 8 AWG. An outdoor, listed, self-contained spa on a deck can skip perimeter bonding if the unit is marked for outdoor use, sits on or above grade and meets a rim-height condition. Anything field-built, in-ground or next to a pool gets a closer look.
Bonding is checked before things are covered. Concrete, decking and tile hide the work. If the inspector cannot see the bonding wire, the inspector can ask you to open it up.
Pools add more rules
A pool brings more metal, more wiring and sometimes lights under the water. The 2023 NEC requires GFCI protection for 125V to 250V receptacles rated 60 amps or less within 20 feet of the pool wall. Pumps, heaters, lights, covers and controls each have their own conductor and bonding rules.
Pool work involves several trades. The electrician runs conduit and bonding before the concrete, and the city inspects bonding at a set stage. Late changes to the pump, heater or lighting can change the circuits you need, so settle the equipment list before the electrical rough-in.
Permits and who coordinates them
Hot tub and pool wiring needs an electrical permit in most SoCal cities. The guide to electrical permits in Southern California explains how the city inspection works. For a pool, the shell has its own building permit, so you may end up with a pool permit and an electrical permit. Some cities combine them and some do not. Call the city building department and ask:
- Is the electrical work on the pool permit or a separate permit?
- Which inspection stage covers bonding?
- Is a final electrical inspection needed before the water is filled or the tub is used?
A licensed C-10 electrician can pull the electrical permit. Check the licence before you sign. The licence check guide takes about two minutes.
Panel capacity
A 50-amp spa circuit is a big new load on a home that already runs an air conditioner, a dryer or an EV charger. A load calculation shows whether the panel has room. Older 100-amp panels may need a subpanel or a panel upgrade first. Fixr puts a panel upgrade at $1,500 to $4,500 nationally as of October 2026, shown on the panel upgrade range.
Cost
As of October 2026 the typical SoCal range is $800 to $2,500, based on estimates. See hot tub and pool wiring cost for what the range includes. A short run from the panel to a spa on the patio sits at the low end. Trenching across a yard, a finished wall to fish, or a long conduit run pushes it up. Fixr lists $120 to $200 for the 220V outlet alone and about $70 more to bury the cable, and a full spa circuit with disconnect costs more than that outlet figure; the rest of the range is a desk estimate.

Questions people ask
Can I plug my hot tub into a regular outlet?
Only a small plug-and-play spa rated for a 120V, 20A GFCI outlet can. Even those need their own circuit. Most multi-jet tubs need a dedicated 240V circuit, often 50 amps, and cannot run from a household outlet. The data plate on the spa sets the breaker size, so read it before you buy a tub or call an electrician.
Where does the hot tub disconnect have to go?
It has to be within sight of the spa and reachable without going through a door or gate. A common layout puts it about 5 feet from the inside wall of the tub. The exact distance depends on the code edition your city enforces and on the spa's data plate, so the inspector has the final word.
Does a pool need a separate electrical permit from the pool itself?
Usually yes. The pool or spa shell is built under a building permit, and the wiring is inspected under an electrical permit. Some cities put both on one application and some split them. Ask the building department how it handles pool permits, and have the electrical inspection scheduled before the deck is poured or the tub is covered.
Why do I need bonding if the spa is already grounded?
Grounding sends fault current back to the panel. Bonding ties nearby metal together so that no two metal parts can sit at different voltages while a person touches both in wet conditions. Code treats them as two separate jobs. A listed self-contained spa on a deck can skip some perimeter bonding, but the electrician checks the label first.
