Home EV charger installation in San Diego

A San Diego charger is usually a garage job. What varies is panel headroom from coast to inland, whether the house is historic, and how the rate works.

Coast and inland load very differently

Coastal San Diego sits in climate zone 7, where July highs are near 75 F and air conditioning is a smaller load. Inland ZIPs such as 92127, 92128 and 92131 are in zone 10, where cooling takes much more of the panel on summer evenings. The same 40 amp charger circuit can fit comfortably on the coast and strain a panel inland. Tell the electrician where the house is, and ask to see the load calculation, not just the circuit size they propose. Where the panel is the limit, SDG&E lists Meter Socket Adapters and load management as alternatives to a full upgrade, and the load calculation page explains what the numbers mean.

Historic homes and districts

A designated historic resource, or a house inside a historic district, cannot use the City’s no-plan route and goes through historical review with a full permit. That applies to older blocks in neighborhoods such as Golden Hill and North Park. Ask the City’s map of historic resources about your address before you pick a date. For an ordinary garage charger, none of this applies.

Understanding the rate

SDG&E’s EV-TOU-5 plan is for households with a registered EV who can charge overnight, with the cheapest hours late at night. San Diego households are enrolled by default in San Diego Community Power for generation, so the totals on SDG&E’s own sheet will not match your bill. Prices change at least yearly, so read the current table, and see the SDG&E programs guide before you commit. SDG&E and the community power program do not list a fixed home-charger rebate, so budget the full cost. The charger cost page shows ranges with and without panel work.

What a good quote lists

Ask that the quote name the permit and the City’s inspection charge as separate lines, since both are City costs apart from labor. It should also say who books the inspection and who must be home to open the panel. Confirm the contractor’s C-10 license with the license guide. Condos and townhomes add one more step, an association request under Civil Code 4745. Read the San Diego city page for local background.

Charger permit path

Per IB 187: an EV charger in a private garage at a single dwelling, duplex or townhouse needs no plans or calculations. Apply online and select Simple No Plan Permits (No-Plan - Residential - Combination Mech/Elec/Plum). A completed City circuit card (DS-1779A) with the load calculation must be on site for the inspector. Pre-wiring for a future charger needs only an electrical permit (conduit and wiring ending at a junction box), and the charger itself needs a separate permit later. IB 187 states that all EVCS installations must be completed by a licensed electrical contractor (C-10).

Questions people ask

Does a historic San Diego home need extra review for a charger?

Yes. A designated historic resource or a house in a historic district cannot use the City's online no-plan route. It goes through a standalone electrical permit with plans, and historical review applies. Ask the City about your address before you set a date. Ordinary garages in non-historic homes follow the simpler route.

Will my coastal San Diego panel need an upgrade for a charger?

Often not. Coastal homes carry less air conditioning load, so a load calculation frequently shows room for a charger circuit. If the service is full, SDG&E lists Meter Socket Adapters and load management as other options. Get the calculation in writing, then ask the electrician to price a panel upgrade only if it is needed.

What should an EV charger quote list in San Diego?

It should list labor, the charger, the circuit and wiring, the permit and the City's inspection charge, each separately. It should also say who books the inspection and whether a panel or service change is included. A quote that lumps these together makes it hard to compare bids. Ask for line items.

When is the best time of day to charge on EV-TOU-5?

Late at night, in the super off-peak window, when the plan's price is lowest. The 4 to 9 p.m. peak is the most expensive. Most chargers and cars let you set a start time. Prices change at least yearly, so check SDG&E's current table and your own supplier's generation price.
